Recovery AIX system when hang on boot (554 code error).

If AIX system does not boot properly, possible causes could be:

  • corrupted file system
  • corrupted Journaled File System (JFS) log device
  • bad IPL-device record or bad IPL-device magic number; the magic number indicates the device type
  • corrupted copy of the Object Data Manager (ODM) database on the boot logical volume
  • fixed disk (hard disk) in the inactive state in the root volume group
  • bad zonning mapping with (NPIV, VSCSI, switches FC, SAn storage)

Follow this steps to recovery the system.

1. Boot AIX in maintenance mode (From DVD, MKSYSB, NIM or TAPE).
NOTE: Booteable media must be the same version and level as the system.

Choose Start Maintenance Mode for System Recovery (Option 3)

  • Choose Start Maintenance Mode for System Recovery (Option 3). The next screen displays prompts for the Maintenance menu.

    1 Start Install Now with Default Settings

    2 Change/Show Installation Settings and Install

  •  Choose Access a Root Volume Group (Option 1).
                   Maintenance

Type the number of your choice and press Enter.

  • Select the root volume group by number. The logical volumes in rootvg will be displayed with two options below.

2. Run fsck to repair filesystems (Do not use -y option)

# fsck -p /dev/hd4
# fsck -p /dev/hd2
# fsck -p /dev/hd9var
# fsck -p /dev/hd3
# fsck -p /dev/hd1
  • If fsck indicates that block XX could not be read, the file system is probably unrecoverable (Nothing to do, stop this procedure andrecover system from backup)
  • If fsck indicates that a file system has an unknown log record type, a corruption of the JFS log logical volume has been detected. Use the logform command to reformat it.
# /usr/sbin/logform /dev/hd8
  • If the file system checks were successful, continue procedure

3. Reboot the system.

# exit
# sync;sync;sync;reboot

4.  AIX failed again?  Check ODM.

If AIX does not boot OK, is possible that ODM is corrupt. The following steps will overwrite your Object Data Manager (ODM) database files. You have to be carefull with this. You will loose important infotmation like network , devices and imported volume groups.

# mount /dev/hd4 /mnt
# mount /dev/hd2 /mnt/usr
# mkdir /mnt/etc/objrepos/bak
# cp /mnt/etc/objrepos/Cu* /mnt/etc/objrepos/bak
# cp /etc/objrepos/Cu* /mnt/etc/objrepos
# umount /dev/hd2
# umount /dev/hd4
# exit
  • Determine which disk is the boot disk with the lslv command. The boot disk will be shown in the PV1 column of the lslv output.
# lslv -m hd5
hd5:N/A
LP    PP1  PV1               PP2  PV2               PP3  PV3
0001  0102 hdisk4

5. Save the clean ODM database to the boot logical volume. (# is the number of the fixed disk, determined with the previous command.)

# savebase -d /dev/hdisk#

6. Recreate the boot image (hdisk4 in our case):

# bosboot -a -d /dev/hdisk4

7. Make sure the bootlist is set correctly:

8. Make changes, if necessary:

# bootlist -m normal hdiskX cdX

9. Make sure that the disk drive that you have chosen as your bootable device has a yes next to it:

# ipl_varyon -i

AIX hangs on boot? How to debug boot process on AIX systems?

Today an AIX system hanged when reboot. What’s going on? Where can I see the debug verbose log of boot process?

Just, follow this steps.

1- Boot AIX LPAR from HMC in “Open firmware OK prompt”mode:

open_firmware_from_hmc

boot

2- Connect ssh to HMC/FSM with user hscroot and execute “vtmenu” command:

Reconfigure RSCT ID to fix DLPAR issues on cloned AIX systems.

 

ON AIX systems, RMC daemons are part of the Reliable, Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT). They allows the HMC to communicate with a managed logical partition to do DLPAR operations. But, when we clone an AIX system, for example using mksysb, RSCT ID is not reconfigured and of course, DLPAR is not working anymor.

To solve thsi issue, you need to reconfigure RSCT ID. FOllwo this steps to fix this issue.

1- Get RSCT ID (before change it).

[root@aix:/] cat /etc/ct_node_id
250083fc821083e6

2- Reconfigure RSCT ID on AIX client.

[root@aix:/] /usr/sbin/rsct/install/bin/uncfgct -n
[root@aix:/] /usr/sbin/rsct/install/bin/cfgct

3- Verify RSCT ID (after change it)

[root@aix:/] cat /etc/ct_node_id
bfcc4535bc55378

4- Restart RMC on AIX client.

[root@aix:/] /usr/sbin/rsct/bin/rmcctrl -z
[root@aix:/] /usr/sbin/rsct/bin/rmcctrl -A
[root@aix:/] /usr/sbin/rsct/bin/rmcctrl -p

5- Wait 5 min and check again RMC connection between HMC or FSM.

5- From AIX, check conenction wirh HMC/FSM.

Setup private yum repository for AIX clients.

 

Prerequisites:

  •   A Unix server on your private network:
    • Accessing IBM repository ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/)
    •    Apache server installed to serve RPM files for internal AIX clients.
    •    AIX clients must access this Apache server via http.

1- Mirror IBM’s aixtoolbox site.
Let’s mirror IBM’s aixtoolbox site to our Unix server using wget. Run these commands:

[root@unix.domain:/] mkdir /repo
[root@unix.domain:/] chown apache:apache /repo
[root@unix.domain:/] cd /repo
[root@unix.domain:/] wget -m ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/

Once downloaded all folders/files from IBM, let’s configure Apache server.

2- Setup and configure Apache server to serve internal AIX clients.
Add the following Apache directove to http.conf and restart yoru server. Apache server is listen on port 80/TCP.

Install and configure yum on AIX.

Prerequisites:

1- Verify which RPM version you have installed.

How to remove bos.sysmgt.nim.master fileset from NIM server?

If you try to unistall bos.sysmgt.nim.master fileset from smitty:

Create jfs2 file system on AIX

Create a jfs2 file system on AIX:

First, you need to know:
– volume group?
– Type of filesystem (jfs, jfs2)?
– Mount point to mount the filesystem?

There are two ways to create filesystems on AIX:
1- Over an existing created logical volume (In this example, we’ll create a new filesystem over logical volume ‘newlv’, size 32M, mounted on /newfs, type jfs2.)

[root@aix:/] crfs -v jfs2 -A yes -d newlv -m /newfs
File system created successfully.
32560 kilobytes total disk space.
New File System size is 65536

NOTE: '-A yes' means to mount automatically the FS

2- Or creating a new LV (In this example we’ll create a new filesystem mounted on /newfs2, size 64MB, type jfs2 inside volume group ‘newvg’)

[root@aix:/] crfs -v jfs2 -g newvg -A yes -m /newfs2 -a size=64M
File system created successfully.
65328 kilobytes total disk space.
New File System size is 131072

NOTE: '-A yes' means to mount automatically the FS

Then, let’s mount filesystems:

[root@aix:/] mount /newfs
[root@aix:/] mount /newfs2

Now, you can check the filesystem with ‘lsfs’ and ‘df’ command:

[root@aix:/] df -m /newfs
Filesystem    MB blocks      Free %Used    Iused %Iused Mounted on
/dev/fslv05       64.00     63.67    1%        4     1% /newfs2
